Why is Europe so awesome? Everywhere you go there is something amazing whether its historical or or not. this weekend in Dublin and Paris we went on a hop on hop off bus. We saw a lot of historically buildings and statues. The Eiffel Tower was by far my favorite in Paris. The shear size and all around magnitude of the tower was awe-striking. Then when we went to Dublin the monument that struck me the most was the O'Connell monument. It seems like all of Dublin's monuments were made for some sort of rebellion or during some rebellion. All around it was quite the weekend.
This brings me to the point that when Luigi Barzini says there is a fatal attraction to Italy I believe a better said statement would be there is a fatal attraction to Europe. I believe that this is a better statement. I'm not to sure why this attraction exists here but I know it does. I have never felt this at home this far away from home (I also have never been this far from home). Europe is a great place which has a bewitching attraction to it.
In week three I had my first view of St. Peter's Basilica and it was amazing. It was probably the biggest one storey buildings I have ever been in. Much bigger then any field house that I have ever been in. The artistry that went into every inch of the church is simply amazing. In the letter of of Paul he talks about worshiping God. He begged of people to do it in a way that was "Worthy of thinking beings." When you look at the church and the size of it its hard not to see how people really stuck to what Paul said.
This brings me to the "mutual love" portion of his letter. Not only did I love this church but I love the surrounding area. Now I know that Paul was talking about the love of your partner and neighbor But I figured that could be applied to your surroundings. We tour many different churches some of different religions and some are even different styles. When we go into these churches we all go in super respectful of that denominations world. This is loving your neighbor. Having respect for something that you don't fully understand is love for that person. Its great to know that everyone in this group is so easy to that point.
David,
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. I am as you are falling in love with Europe. I agree 100% with feeling at home in such a far away place. I felt the same way with the Eiffel Tour when we were in Paris and I cannot wait to go to Dublin in a couple of weeks.
Dave, I agree with your "remix" of Barzini's quote about the attraction to Europe. There is just so much to see and learn about. I felt the same way as you and Amy about the Eiffel Tower, it was amazing!
ReplyDeleteDave, I loved the Eiffel Tower as well! It's just so different when it's right in front of you. This weekend was definitely one for the books!
ReplyDeleteDave, I really liked the "mutual love" portion of your blog. You helped me understand St. Paul's letter and i agree that everyone in our group seems to respect every church we go in very well.
ReplyDeleteCiao David,
ReplyDeleteGreat blog. Nice integration of the texts to explain your experience. Well done.
